Memorial, Inc., Receives $150,000 Grant

The Ohio Developmental Disabilities Council (ODDC) recently awarded Memorial, Inc., in Cincinnati $150,000 to staff a Professional and Teacher Development Task Force. The goal of this three-year statewide project is to ensure that educational needs of students with disabilities are met in Ohio’s implementation of the federal No Child Left Behind Act and reauthorization of federal legislation known as IDEA (Individuals with Disabilities Education Act).

Task force members will be a statewide representation of educational stakeholders. They will provide guidance for professional and teacher development aimed toward educational needs of students with disabilities. The task force will educate public policymakers at all levels about needs for better-prepared professionals and teachers to educate students with disabilities in all educational settings.

Cathy Heizman, advocacy director for Memorial Inc., will oversee the project. The Advocacy Division of Memorial has extensive experience in providing training, information and direct educational advocacy for children with disabilities and their families. Memorial has served over 10,000 families in the past three years though its advocacy program.

The ODDC is one of a national network of state councils committed to self-determination and community inclusion for people with developmental disabilities. ODDC receives federal funding to help carry out its mission of developing new and better ways of advocating, increasing capacities to assist people, and making needed changes to systems.

ODDC consists of members appointed by the Governor. Members are people with developmental disabilities, parents and guardians of people with developmental disabilities, representatives from concerned state agencies, and nonprofit organizations and agencies that provide services to people with developmental disabilities.
